As our firm's logo illustrates, we believe the ability to maintain discipline throughout varying investment environments is derived from having access to a coordinated plan positioned to withstand both “sailing” and “rowing” markets.
“Sailing” markets occur when market winds are at your back and the economic waters are calm. In these markets, volatility is low, creating smooth investing seas and easy travel. In an effort to capture as much of the available market winds as possible, investors open their sails as high and wide as they can.
Conditions change, however. Economic winds turn, and the financial waters grow very rough and choppy. Turbulent and unpredictable currents may push you off course and leave doubt and uncertainty in their wake. During these periods, an investor deploying a “sailing only” strategy will likely be pushed backward. Situations like this require the ability to “row” and use quick maneuvering to stay on course.
